Vessel Tracking Communication Options

Effective Vessel Tracking is dependent on the choice of communication technology used to transmit the Vessel Positioning data to the end user. MVM Vessel Tracking is able to transmit the data using the various method below.

Meridian offers the following tried and proven communication options for vessel tracking:

GSM Data Link

Advantages:

  • Small, Portable and Easy to Install
  • Low cost per call

Disadvantages:

  • Limited coverage (dependent on GSM provider)
  • Vehicle application only

UHF Data Link

Advantages:

  • No cost per transmission
  • Portable and easy to install

Disadvantages:

  • Limited range (approx. 30km)
  • Licensing requirement
  • Vessel application only

Satellite Data Links (Inmarsat C & Inmarsat D+)

Advantages:

  • World-wide coverage
  • Low power requirement, small & portable (Inmarsat D+)
  • Standard position data strings (little programming required)
  • Applicable to both vehicles and vessels
  • Very reliable
  • Emails can be sent to and from the vessel if a PC is included on the vessel.

Disadvantages:

  • Costs charged per call
  • Increase in cost compared to other systems
  • Limit to amount of data sent per transmission
