Environmental Monitoring Station Installation

The monitoring station consists of the following elements:

A)     Texas Weather Instruments 1-wire Weather Station

The weather station consists of a few modules:

  1. Wind speed/direction sensor (with built-in temperature sensor).
  2. A second wind speed/direction sensor (with built-in temperature sensor) installed on the opposite side of the platform as an online backup & to reduce effects of distortion by any structures.
  3. Two barometric pressure sensors (with built-in temperature sensors) installed in water-resistant enclosures. The seconds pressure sensor is an online backup for the first sensor.
  4. A processing computer that archives and displays the data, as well as distributing it to clients via email & the web (Intranet & Internet).

B)     Seabird SBE 39

The Seabird SBE 39 is a high precision temperature probe used to measure seabed temperature extremely accurately. The probe is mounted on the sea-floor directly underneath the platform.

C)    Sontek Argonaut SL

The Sontek Argonaut SL (side-looking) is a combination sensor, providing the following information:

1)    Water current speed & direction
2)    Wave height & period
3)    Wave spectra
4)    Tide height
5)    Water temperature

All this information is obtained from a single unit, mounted on the end of a vertical pole on the seadeck of the platform. The unit is situated about 7 metres underwater, looking outwards in a northerly direction (for the purpose of measuring current by the Doppler principle).
