Meridian Surveys  is pleased to be able to provide a free, real-time display of the Wilderness Explorer South America 2006 journey. The service is completely automated.  The position updates are sent at pre-programmed intervals from the vehicle's  Inmarsat D+ communications satellites and Inmarsat D+ terminal to a Land Earth Station (LES).  The LES automatically forwards the update to Meridian's Control Center in Kuala Lumpur where the position is plotted by the computer on a computer map and then uploaded to the web site every 30 minutes.  All software modules required to perform this task were written in-house here in Malaysia.

It is expected that live data will be available on this page on 12th October 2006 when the participants start off from Buenos Aires.

Do you have Google Earth?

If so, right click here, Save Target As (and select default name and whatever location you like)
(Note that if using Internet Explorer, it will try to rename the *.kml file to a *.xml file so you will need to force it to save as .kml file)
Once the file is saved locally, click on Open button. This file will show you in Google Earth the path that Wilderness Explorer South America 2006 will be taking.

Then, using the same step as above, download this second file which will show you the progress of journey.

The expected path will be shown in red while the taken path is in green. The icons you see is the rest stops along the way.
